How the Boating Go / No-Go Rules Work
Wind speed alone does not determine boating safety; hull geometry, freeboard, vessel displacement, and propulsion type dictate how watercraft respond to lake chop and sudden gusts. Our Boating Go / No-Go Checker uses specific recreational safety guidelines stored in our versioned boating rule engine (v1.0):
| Craft Type |
Go Cutoff (Sustained) |
Caution Threshold |
No-Go Gust Cutoff |
Why These Limits Exist |
| Kayak / Paddleboard |
≤ 8 mph |
9 â 12 mph |
> 16 mph |
Low freeboard craft capsize easily in 1-foot chop and paddle fatigue sets in quickly against headwinds. |
| Jon Boat (<16ft) |
≤ 10 mph |
11 â 15 mph |
> 20 mph |
Flat-bottom hulls pound heavily in waves and lack self-bailing cockpits if water splashes over the transom. |
| Bass Boat |
≤ 14 mph |
15 â 20 mph |
> 25 mph |
High-speed hulls handle moderate waves well at cruise, but low-slung casting decks take on water while trolling. |
| Pontoon Boat |
≤ 13 mph |
14 â 18 mph |
> 24 mph |
Large pontoon fences and bimini tops create massive windage, making docking in crosswinds hazardous. |
| Sailboat (<25ft) |
≤ 16 mph |
17 â 22 mph |
> 28 mph |
Needs sufficient breeze to maneuver, but small keels and centerboards risk knockdowns when gusts top 20 mph. |
Automatic Marine Advisory Overrides
Regardless of forecast wind numbers, our engine executes an immediate safety override if the National Weather Service issues an active hazardous weather statement for the lake's coordinates.
- Small Craft Advisory / Lake Wind Advisory: Forces an automatic Caution or No-Go for all small vessels.
- Gale / Severe Thunderstorm / Tornado Warning: Forces an unconditional No-Go status across all vessel classes.
- Thunderstorm Forecast: Any hourly forecast period that includes terms such as "thunderstorms" or "lightning" is automatically marked No-Go for that hour. Lightning strikes on open water are fatal, and downdraft squalls can produce 50+ mph microbursts with zero advance notice.
Important Safety Disclaimer
The recommendations provided by this tool are WaterLakeLevel planning guidelines. They do not constitute an official maritime safety rating, regulatory navigation order, or legal guarantee of safe transit. Weather on inland reservoirs can develop rapidly due to local topography, thermal heating, and lake-breeze fronts. Always check official NWS radar and consult with local lake authorities before launching.
